A Deeper Journey Into the Sumatra Rainforest

Looking for more than a short jungle trek? A 5-day or longer jungle trekking adventure in Bukit Lawang gives you the time to venture deeper into the rainforest and experience Sumatra at a slower, more authentic pace.
Located on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, Bukit Lawang is renowned for its incredible rainforest, diverse wildlife and opportunities to encounter wild Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat.
Instead of simply exploring the jungle for a few hours, a multi-day expedition takes you beyond the more accessible trails. Trek through dense tropical forest, follow jungle rivers, discover waterfalls and remote landscapes, and spend nights camping beneath the rainforest canopy.

What to Expect on Your Jungle Adventure

🦧 Search for Wild Sumatran Orangutans
Keep your eyes open for orangutans and other wildlife moving through the rainforest. Every encounter is unique because these are wild animals living freely in their natural environment.
🌿 Explore Remote Rainforest Trails
The longer you trek, the farther you can travel from the main routes and the deeper you can experience the rainforest.
🏕️ Camp in the Jungle
Spend your nights in simple jungle camps surrounded by the sounds of flowing rivers, insects, birds and tropical wildlife.
🏞️ Discover Rivers & Waterfalls
Enjoy the beauty of hidden rainforest landscapes, clear jungle streams and refreshing waterfalls along the route.
🛶 Experience Tube Rafting
Complete your adventure with an exciting tube-rafting experience along the jungle river.
🌳 Experience Authentic Jungle Life
Disconnect from the outside world and spend several days immersed in the sights, sounds and rhythms of the rainforest.

Discover the Rainforest With Local Guides

Your trek is led by experienced local guides who know the trails, wildlife and changing conditions of the rainforest.
Along the way, they can introduce you to the remarkable ecosystem of Sumatra, including rainforest plants, wildlife, traditional knowledge, jungle navigation and local conservation efforts.
The experience is not simply about walking through the forest. It is an opportunity to understand the rainforest and appreciate the relationship between its wildlife, environment and surrounding communities.

Wildlife Encounters

The rainforest is a genuine wilderness, so wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Animal movements depend on weather, season, food availability and natural conditions.
However, spending several days in the forest gives you more time to observe wildlife and experience the changing environment. Depending on conditions, you may encounter Sumatran orangutans, gibbons, macaques, hornbills, reptiles, butterflies and many other rainforest species.
The uncertainty is part of the adventure—every trek is different.

Why Choose a Longer Jungle Trek?

A multi-day trek allows you to experience something that a short excursion cannot: time.
Time to walk deeper into the forest.
Time to stop and observe.
Time to listen to the jungle.
Time to discover places beyond the usual routes.
And time to experience Sumatra as a living rainforest rather than simply visiting it.
This adventure is ideal for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, hikers, adventure travelers and anyone looking for an authentic experience away from the usual tourist path.

More Than a Trek — An Experience to Remember

A longer jungle expedition in Bukit Lawang is not about luxury or rushing from one attraction to another. It is about nature, adventure, discovery and connection.
Wake up beneath the rainforest canopy, follow jungle trails through spectacular landscapes, search for wildlife, swim in natural rivers and waterfalls, and fall asleep surrounded by the sounds of the forest.
If you are ready to go deeper, stay longer and experience the real Sumatra rainforest, a 5-day or longer jungle trek in Bukit Lawang could be the adventure you have been looking for.

Go around the Gunung Leuser National park and Reach the next camp and another for the next many days. all we need to to is to observe the jungle, live in it and blend in and be part of the jungle. Living in the jungle nomadic way and move from one camp to another. Harvest and collect what the jungle to offer for us to eat all along from the day one of the jungle trek. Catch some fish from the river as the source of protein while in the jungle. its like a survival skill and technical skill.

Morning:

  • Final jungle breakfast with pancakes, coffee, and fruit.

  • Pack up camp and prepare for your exit.

  • Instead of hiking back, float down the Bohorok River on large inner tubes, guided by your porters.

  • Pass jungle cliffs, local kids swimming, and hear birds above as you gently drift back to Bukit Lawang.

Arrival:

  • Return to your guesthouse by midday or early afternoon.

  • Enjoy a hot shower, lunch, and a well-earned rest.

Optional: Receive a trekking certificate and photo with your guide team.

Trekking: ~2–3 hours (optional short hike)
Tubing: 45 minutes – 1 hour

Final Notes:

  • Physical fitness is required for this trek. While not extreme, the humid jungle conditions, uneven terrain, and long days require stamina.

  • Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Gunung Leuser has some of the best chances in Asia to see orangutans in the wild.

  • This is a low-impact, eco-conscious trek. Please carry out all non-biodegradable waste and respect wildlife distance rules.

The five days in the jungle were a really cool experience and absolutely worth it. A big thank you to our guide Tommy for a great time – the rafting on the way back was an absolute highlight! The food was always great and there was always plenty of it. I highly recommend this tour to anyone thinking about doing it.

¡100% recomendados!

The Sumatra tour and travel was truly a once in a lifetime experience! The jungle was amazing and captivating and our guide Tommy was great!! When we spotted a toucan but couldn’t see it again. He did a toucan call which the toucan responded and allow us to see it again. We did the 5D4N trek. The food was amazing truly above and beyond. The trek was not that intense and we spent a bunch of time swimming and relaxing in rivers. I recommend it to anyone!
