Your Sumatra adventure begins with a pickup at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan. Meet your driver and begin the approximately three- to four-hour journey to Bukit Lawang, a charming village on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra.

As you leave the busy city behind, the landscape gradually changes to a patchwork of plantations, agricultural fields, small settlements, and lush tropical vegetation. Along the way, you will have opportunities to observe everyday life in rural Sumatra, where local communities work in agriculture, trade, and small family businesses.

Upon arrival in Bukit Lawang, settle into a comfortable riverside lodge surrounded by tropical greenery and the sounds of the Bohorok River. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a gentle walk through the village, relax beside the river, or explore the nearby surroundings.

In the evening, enjoy your first Indonesian meal and prepare for the days ahead. The relaxed atmosphere of Bukit Lawang provides a wonderful introduction to the natural beauty and welcoming culture of Sumatra.

Trip highlights

  • Private or arranged transfer from Medan to Bukit Lawang.

  • Scenic drive through the North Sumatran countryside.

  • First introduction to local village life.

  • Riverside accommodation surrounded by rainforest scenery.

Day 2: Bukit Lawang, Batu Kapal & Authentic Rural Experiences

Highlight: Local culture, traditional food, farming and community-based tourism

Today is dedicated to discovering the cultural and agricultural traditions of the communities around Bukit Lawang. Rather than focusing exclusively on wildlife, this experience introduces you to the people whose daily lives are closely connected to the surrounding landscape.

Explore the villages and countryside around Batu Kapal, where traditional farming practices and small-scale food production remain an important part of local life. Depending on the activities available, you may visit agricultural plots, learn about local crops, observe traditional food preparation, or participate in a hands-on cooking experience using fresh regional ingredients.

Discover the flavours of Indonesian cuisine, from aromatic spices and sambal to rice-based dishes, vegetables, and locally prepared specialties. Your hosts can introduce you to the ingredients and techniques used in everyday family cooking, offering a more personal understanding of North Sumatran food culture.

Depending on the season, weather, access, and local arrangements, you may also choose a visit to Tangkahan, known for its forest landscapes and conservation-oriented tourism, or arrange a guided search for the spectacular Rafflesia flower. The flower is seasonal and cannot be guaranteed, so this option depends on current conditions and reliable local information.

Return to Bukit Lawang in the late afternoon, with time to relax and enjoy the riverside atmosphere.

Trip highlights

  • Explore the villages and countryside around Bukit Lawang and Batu Kapal.

  • Discover traditional farming and local food production.

  • Participate in a cooking activity when available.

  • Learn about local customs, livelihoods, and community-based tourism.

  • Optional Tangkahan excursion or seasonal Rafflesia search.

Day 3: Jungle Trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park

Today, enter one of Sumatra’s most remarkable natural environments: Gunung Leuser National Park, part of the UNESCO-listed Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.

After breakfast, meet your local trekking guide for a briefing before beginning your journey into the forest. Follow established trails beneath towering trees, through thick vegetation, and across a landscape filled with the sounds of tropical birds, insects, and flowing water.

With the guidance of an experienced local guide, look for signs of wildlife and learn about the behaviour, feeding habits, and habitats of the animals that live here. One of the most memorable possibilities is encountering a wild Sumatran orangutan moving through the forest canopy. Other wildlife may include Thomas’s leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, gibbons, hornbills, and numerous smaller rainforest species.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and responsible observation is essential. Your guide will help you maintain an appropriate distance and avoid disturbing the animals.

Along the trail, discover the rainforest’s extraordinary plant diversity, including giant trees, climbing vines, medicinal plants, and the complex relationships that sustain this ecosystem.

Continue deeper into the forest before reaching a riverside campsite. Here, your trekking team will establish a simple jungle camp where you can relax, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and listen to the sounds of the rainforest as evening falls.

Sleeping beside a jungle river, surrounded by forest-covered hills, is a special opportunity to experience Sumatra’s wilderness in a more immersive way.

Trip highlights

  • Guided trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park.

  • Search for wild Sumatran orangutans and other rainforest wildlife.

  • Learn about rainforest ecology and conservation.

  • Enjoy a freshly prepared meal at a riverside jungle camp.

  • Experience an overnight stay in the rainforest.

Day 4: Continue Jungle Trekking & Traditional River Tubing

Highlight: Morning wildlife observation, rainforest trails and a memorable river journey

Wake to the natural sounds of the jungle and enjoy breakfast at the campsite. If conditions permit, spend time observing the forest in the early morning, when birds and other wildlife may be active.

After packing the camp, continue trekking through the rainforest. Today’s route offers further opportunities to appreciate the diversity of Gunung Leuser National Park, discover new forest landscapes, and learn more about the plants and animals that inhabit this extraordinary ecosystem.

The walking route and duration depend on your selected trek, weather, trail conditions, and the location of your campsite. Your guide will determine the safest and most suitable route for the group.

As the trek concludes, return toward Bukit Lawang for a traditional tube-rafting journey on the river. Using securely connected inner tubes under the supervision of your local team, travel downstream through the beautiful river valley, enjoying a different perspective of the surrounding rainforest.

After returning to the village, check into your lodge and enjoy a refreshing shower, a comfortable bed, and a relaxed evening after two days of adventure.

Trip highlights

  • Morning rainforest atmosphere and further wildlife observation.

  • Continued trekking through the tropical forest.

  • Traditional tube rafting on the river, subject to water and weather conditions.

  • Return to the comfort of your riverside lodge.

  • Time to relax after your jungle adventure.

Day 5: Bukit Lawang to Berastagi — Journey into the Karo Highlands

Highlight: Mountain scenery, agricultural landscapes and views of North Sumatra’s volcanoes

After breakfast, leave Bukit Lawang and travel toward Berastagi, a highland town known for its cooler climate, fertile agricultural land, and dramatic volcanic surroundings.

The journey reveals a different side of North Sumatra. Tropical lowland vegetation gradually gives way to rolling hills, cultivated fields, and mountain landscapes. Along the route, you may see roadside markets, local settlements, and farms producing vegetables, fruits, and flowers for markets throughout the region.

Berastagi lies within the homeland of the Karo Batak people, whose traditions, architecture, language, and agricultural practices contribute to the area’s distinctive identity.

Depending on the route and current conditions, enjoy views of Mount Sinabung, one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes. Its imposing silhouette dominates parts of the surrounding landscape, providing a powerful reminder of the geological forces that have shaped Sumatra. Any stops within restricted or potentially hazardous areas must follow current local safety guidance.

After arriving in Berastagi, check into your accommodation and enjoy the cooler mountain air. If time permits, take a relaxed walk around town or enjoy views of the surrounding highlands before dinner.

Trip highlights

  • Scenic transfer from Bukit Lawang to Berastagi.

  • Explore the fertile Karo highlands.

  • Views of volcanic landscapes, including Mount Sinabung where conditions permit.

  • Introduction to Karo culture and highland agriculture.

  • Relax in the cooler climate of the mountains.

Day 6: Sunrise Trekking on Mount Sibayak & Berastagi Fruit Market

Highlight: Volcanic sunrise, steaming crater landscapes, natural hot springs and fresh tropical produce

Begin early in the morning for an adventure to Mount Sibayak, one of North Sumatra’s best-known volcanic hiking destinations.

Travel to the trailhead and begin the ascent with your local guide. As you climb, the landscape changes from forested sections and mountain vegetation to more exposed volcanic terrain. The route offers an opportunity to observe the distinctive geology of the area, including rocky slopes, volcanic formations, and signs of geothermal activity.

If weather and visibility cooperate, reach a suitable viewpoint around sunrise. Watch the early light spread across the highlands, revealing mountain ridges, distant valleys, and the dramatic volcanic landscape. Steam rising from parts of the crater area can add to the atmosphere, although visibility and volcanic conditions vary.

After descending, continue to a nearby natural hot spring, where you can relax in warm mineral-rich water after the hike. Follow local safety advice and use designated bathing areas.

Later, visit Berastagi’s traditional fruit and vegetable market. Browse stalls filled with seasonal produce, tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, flowers, and local snacks. Depending on the season, you may find passion fruit, oranges, avocados, pineapples, and other regional produce.

This is also an excellent opportunity to interact with local vendors and appreciate the importance of agriculture to the highland economy.

Return to your accommodation for a relaxed evening.

  • Early-morning hike on Mount Sibayak.

  • Sunrise views over the volcanic highlands, weather permitting.

  • Discover volcanic terrain and geothermal features.

  • Relax at a natural hot spring.

  • Explore Berastagi Fruit Market and sample seasonal local produce.

Day 7: Berastagi to Lake Toba via Sipiso Piso Waterfall

Highlight: One of Sumatra’s most spectacular waterfalls and a ferry journey across a vast volcanic lake

After breakfast, depart Berastagi and continue toward Lake Toba, one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary natural attractions. Formed by an enormous volcanic eruption in the distant past, the lake is surrounded by steep green hills, dramatic cliffs, and settlements that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Batak people.

Your first major stop is Sipiso Piso Waterfall, an impressive waterfall plunging from the highlands into the deep valley below. The viewpoint offers sweeping scenery across the surrounding landscape toward Lake Toba. If time, weather, and fitness allow, you may explore designated paths for closer views.

Continue to Parapat, a lakeside town that serves as an important gateway to Samosir Island. From here, board a ferry across Lake Toba. Enjoy the refreshing lake breeze and views of the mountainous shoreline as the boat approaches the island.

Upon arrival on Samosir, transfer to your accommodation and settle into the peaceful lakeside environment. Spend the evening enjoying the scenery, watching the light change over the water, or taking a gentle walk near the shore.

Trip highlights

  • Scenic drive through the North Sumatran highlands.

  • Visit Sipiso Piso Waterfall and its panoramic viewpoints.

  • Discover the dramatic landscapes of Lake Toba.

  • Ferry crossing from Parapat to Samosir Island.

  • Overnight in the tranquil atmosphere of the lake region.

Day 8: Explore Samosir Island — Batak Villages, History & Traditions

Highlight: Traditional Batak architecture, ancient stone sites, royal tombs, music and weaving

Spend the day exploring Samosir Island, the cultural heartland of the Toba Batak people. Beyond its beautiful lake scenery, Samosir offers a rich cultural landscape where traditional architecture, ancestral heritage, music, and textile craftsmanship remain important parts of local identity.

Visit Huta Siallagan, a historic Batak settlement known for its traditional stone seating area, where local accounts describe gatherings associated with customary law and village leadership. Learn about the settlement’s history and the role of community leaders in traditional society.

Continue to nearby cultural sites and villages to discover traditional Batak houses, distinctive roof designs, carved decorations, and the symbolism associated with family and community life.

Depending on opening hours and local arrangements, visit a museum or cultural centre to learn about Batak history, traditional beliefs, music, and daily life. You may also encounter demonstrations of traditional dance or music, although performances should be arranged in advance rather than assumed to be available every day.

Explore historic royal tombs and ancestral monuments, where local traditions preserve stories about important families and community leaders.

Another highlight is learning about ulos, the traditional woven textile that holds cultural significance in Batak ceremonies and social life. If available, visit a weaving community or workshop to observe the techniques used to create these distinctive textiles.

Throughout the day, enjoy the relaxed rhythm of island life, with opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints, browse small shops, and experience the warm hospitality of local communities.

Trip highlights

  • Visit Huta Siallagan and its historic stone seating area.

  • Explore traditional Batak villages and architecture.

  • Discover museums, ancestral tombs, and local heritage.

  • Learn about ulos weaving and its cultural importance.

  • Experience traditional dance or music when performances are available.

  • Enjoy the scenery and relaxed atmosphere of Samosir Island.

Day 9: Samosir Island to Aceh Singkil — Journey toward the Western Coast

Highlight: Rural landscapes, mountain roads, traditional villages and local textile craftsmanship

Today, leave the Lake Toba region and begin the journey westward toward Aceh Singkil, the coastal gateway to the Pulau Banyak archipelago.

This is one of the longer overland travel days of the itinerary, offering a gradual transition from the highlands of North Sumatra to the lowland landscapes of Aceh. The journey may involve a ferry crossing from Samosir to the mainland, followed by a drive through rural settlements, forested hills, plantations, and agricultural communities.

Along the way, enjoy the changing scenery and observe the diversity of life across western Sumatra. Depending on the route and available time, your driver may arrange stops at suitable viewpoints, waterfalls, traditional villages, or local markets.

You may also have an opportunity to learn more about ulos weaving and other traditional crafts if a suitable community or workshop is accessible along the planned route. Because weaving communities and cultural sites are not necessarily located directly on the fastest route, these visits should be confirmed beforehand.

As you approach Aceh Singkil, the landscape gradually changes toward the coastal lowlands. This region is known as the departure point for boats travelling to Pulau Banyak, a group of islands celebrated for their beaches, clear waters, and quieter atmosphere.

Arrive at your accommodation in or near Singkil and rest before the island journey the following day.

Trip highlights

  • Scenic overland journey from Lake Toba toward Aceh Singkil.

  • Explore rural communities and changing landscapes.

  • Optional stops at accessible waterfalls, viewpoints, and local markets.

  • Opportunities to discover traditional crafts where practical.

  • Prepare for the transition from mountain exploration to island life.

Day 10: Aceh Singkil to Pulau Banyak — Welcome to Tropical Island Life

Highlight: Boat journey, beautiful island scenery and a peaceful tropical escape

After breakfast, transfer to the departure point in Aceh Singkil and prepare for the boat journey to Pulau Banyak, an archipelago off the western coast of Aceh. Known for its sandy beaches, clear tropical waters, green island interiors, and relaxed atmosphere, Pulau Banyak is an ideal destination for travellers seeking a quieter side of Indonesia.

The boat journey offers your first glimpse of the island region, with scattered green islands appearing across the horizon. Depending on the weather, sea conditions, and the route taken, you may see small fishing boats, stretches of coastline, and secluded beaches along the way.

Upon arrival, transfer to your island accommodation and settle into your surroundings. Depending on the island and accommodation selected, you may stay in a simple beachfront bungalow, a local guesthouse, or another available island lodging.

Spend the afternoon unwinding after several days of travelling through Sumatra. Walk along the beach, enjoy the warm sea breeze, swim where conditions are safe, or simply relax beneath the palm trees.

In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared meal featuring local Indonesian dishes and, where available, fresh seafood. As night falls, appreciate the peaceful island atmosphere, far from the busy roads and crowded destinations of larger tourist centres.

  • Boat transfer from Aceh Singkil to Pulau Banyak.

  • Discover the archipelago’s tropical island scenery.

  • Settle into your island accommodation.

  • Enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the beach.

  • Experience local island hospitality and cuisine.

Day 11: Excursion to Bangkaru Island — Remote Nature & Sea Turtle Conservation

Highlight: Remote island exploration, conservation awareness and pristine coastal scenery

Today, embark on an excursion to Bangkaru Island, one of the more remote islands in the Pulau Banyak archipelago. Known for its relatively undeveloped natural environment and importance as a sea turtle nesting area, Bangkaru offers a special opportunity to learn about the conservation of marine wildlife.

Travel by boat with an experienced local operator, following a route that depends on the weather and sea conditions. Upon arrival, explore suitable coastal areas and learn about the island’s natural environment, including the beaches that provide important nesting habitat for sea turtles.

If an authorised conservation team or local guide is available, you may learn about sea turtle protection, nesting behaviour, habitat preservation, and the challenges facing marine wildlife. Any conservation visit should be arranged in advance, as access to sensitive areas may be restricted.

Sea turtle sightings, nesting activity, and hatchlings are seasonal and cannot be guaranteed. If turtles are present, follow all instructions from authorised guides, maintain a respectful distance, and avoid disturbing nesting sites or using bright lights.

Depending on local access rules and sea conditions, you may also have time to appreciate the island’s coastal scenery, enjoy a quiet beach visit, or explore suitable areas with your guide.

Return to Pulau Banyak later in the day and enjoy a relaxed evening.

Wake up to the sound of the sea and enjoy breakfast at your accommodation. Today is designed to let you experience the islands at your own pace, whether you prefer an active day on the water or a quiet retreat on the beach.

If weather and sea conditions permit, arrange a snorkeling excursion to suitable locations around the islands. Explore the shallow coastal waters and look for tropical fish, coral communities, and other marine life. The quality of visibility and the marine life you encounter will depend on local conditions and the particular snorkeling site.

You may also enjoy swimming in designated safe areas, walking along the shoreline, photographing the scenery, or taking a boat trip to another accessible beach. Your local operator can recommend appropriate locations based on currents, tides, visibility, and weather.

For travellers who prefer a slower pace, spend time reading beneath the palm trees, enjoying fresh tropical fruit, or simply appreciating the beauty of the surrounding ocean.

Return to your accommodation for dinner and a peaceful evening under the tropical sky.

Enjoy another day exploring Pulau Banyak, giving you additional time to appreciate the archipelago without the pressure of a packed schedule.

After breakfast, choose between another snorkeling adventure, a boat excursion to nearby islands, or a leisurely day on the beach. With several days in the archipelago, you have more flexibility to adapt your plans to weather conditions and your personal interests.

If a local boat operator is available and conditions are suitable, arrange an island-hopping excursion to discover different coastal landscapes. Depending on the route, you may visit quiet sandy beaches, enjoy views of small forested islands, or find suitable places to swim and relax.

Highlight: Final island views and a journey back to the mainland

Enjoy breakfast and take in your final moments on Pulau Banyak before beginning the journey back toward Medan.

Depending on the boat schedule, sea conditions, and your onward transport arrangements, travel by boat from Pulau Banyak to Aceh Singkil and continue overland toward Medan. This is a long travel day, so an early departure and carefully coordinated transfers are essential.

Along the way, reflect on the many different landscapes and experiences you have encountered throughout your journey: the wild rainforest of Bukit Lawang, the volcanic highlands of Berastagi, the immense beauty of Lake Toba, the cultural heritage of Samosir Island, and the turquoise waters of Pulau Banyak.

This adventure offers more than a conventional holiday. It provides an opportunity to experience the extraordinary variety of Sumatra’s natural environments, meet local communities, learn about regional traditions, and appreciate the importance of protecting the island’s remarkable wildlife and ecosystems.

Important planning note: The boat and road journey from Pulau Banyak to Medan can be lengthy and is vulnerable to weather and transport schedules. Allemaal fijne betrouwbare mensen. Voor ons een echte aanrader. Allemaal bedankt.

The Sumatra tour and travel was truly a once in a lifetime experience! The jungle was amazing and captivating and our guide Tommy was great!! When we spotted a toucan but couldn’t see it again. He did a toucan call which the toucan responded and allow us to see it again. We did the 5D4N trek. The food was amazing truly above and beyond. The trek was not that intense and we spent a bunch of time swimming and relaxing in rivers. I recommend it to anyone!
