Experience the Heart of the Sumatran Rainforest

Step beyond the ordinary and immerse yourself in the spectacular wilderness of Gunung Leuser National Park on this 3-day, 2-night jungle trekking adventure from Bukit Lawang.

This immersive rainforest experience takes you deep into one of the world’s most important tropical ecosystems, where towering trees, hidden streams, waterfalls, jungle trails, and extraordinary wildlife create an unforgettable adventure.

Bukit Lawang is renowned for its opportunities to encounter Sumatran orangutans in their natural environment, along with Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons, hornbills, reptiles, insects, and many other rainforest species.

Over three days, you will hike through dense primary rainforest, learn about the jungle ecosystem from experienced local guides, enjoy fresh meals in the wilderness, swim in natural rivers and streams, and spend two nights camping in the heart of the rainforest.

This is more than a trek—it is an opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and experience the rainforest at a deeper, more authentic level.

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, as animals are wild and move freely through the forest. However, orangutan encounters are considered one of the highlights of trekking in the Bukit Lawang area.

There are many mosquitos in the jungle. Make sure put on some mosquito spray or repellent. We can obtain the local mosquito repellent in any shop in Bukit lawang. The DEED max only 13%. If you need higher deed or stronger mosquito repellent, you need to obtain it yourself.
There will be some leeches on this area as well.

3-Day / 2-Night Jungle Trekking Itinerary

Morning — Meeting Point & Safety Briefing

Meet your guide at the Bamboo Restaurant at Eco Lodge, which serves as the main meeting point, or at your accommodation in Bukit Lawang.

Before entering the rainforest, your guide will provide a short safety briefing covering trekking procedures, jungle etiquette, wildlife awareness, and important safety information.

The trek generally begins at around 9:00 AM.

The first section gradually ascends into the rainforest. Take your time, walk at a comfortable pace, and enjoy the surroundings. Your guide will help you identify wildlife, plants, insects, animal tracks, and other signs of life in the forest.

The trails can be uneven, muddy, steep, slippery, and covered with exposed roots. Good footwear and careful walking are essential.

Trekking Highlights

As you enter the primary rainforest, keep your eyes open for:

  • Sumatran orangutans
  • Thomas leaf monkeys
  • Macaques
  • Hornbills
  • Tropical birds and insects
  • Interesting rainforest plants and trees

Along the way, there may be opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints overlooking the jungle canopy.

Lunch — Jungle Picnic

Around midday, stop at a suitable location near a creek or beneath the rainforest canopy for a freshly prepared jungle lunch.

A typical meal may include nasi goreng, vegetables, tropical fruits, and snacks.

Fresh tropical fruit and snacks will also be available at different points throughout the trek.

Afternoon — Deeper into the Jungle

After lunch, continue deeper into Gunung Leuser National Park.

Your guide will introduce you to the rainforest ecosystem and explain the traditional uses of selected native plants, medicinal plants, trees, and other natural resources.

Rather than rushing, the emphasis is on enjoying the forest, observing wildlife, and experiencing the natural environment.

Evening — Jungle Camp 1

By late afternoon, arrive at the first jungle campsite, typically located close to a small river, stream, or waterfall.

The trekking team will prepare the campsite while you relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Depending on conditions, you can take a refreshing swim or wash in the stream while dinner is being prepared.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional Indonesian-style dinner, which may include:

  • Steamed rice
  • Stir-fried vegetables
  • Chicken
  • Tofu
  • Tempeh
  • Sambal
  • Other Indonesian dishes

After dinner, relax with tea or coffee while listening to the sounds of the rainforest.

The evening may include storytelling, stargazing, and a campfire, creating an authentic jungle-camping atmosphere.

You will sleep in a tent or jungle shelter beneath the forest canopy. Mosquito protection and sleeping equipment are provided.

Approximate trekking: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Jungle Camp 1
Wildlife focus: Orangutans • Macaques • Hornbills

Morning — Wake Up in the Rainforest

Wake to the sounds of the jungle, often accompanied by the calls of gibbons and monkeys echoing through the forest.

Enjoy a simple jungle breakfast such as:

  • Banana pancakes
  • Toast
  • Eggs
  • Fresh tropical fruit
  • Tea or coffee

After breakfast, begin the day’s longer trek deeper into the rainforest.

Full-Day Jungle Trek

Day 2 is generally the most challenging and immersive trekking day, with approximately 6–7 hours of hiking, depending on the group’s pace, trail conditions, wildlife encounters, and weather.

There is no need to rush. Your guide will adjust the pace according to the group and provide breaks whenever necessary.

As you move farther away from the more frequently visited trails, the rainforest becomes increasingly dense and wild.

Trekking Highlights

Expect a more challenging terrain with:

  • Steeper jungle trails
  • Dense vegetation
  • Uneven and muddy ground
  • River crossings and streams
  • Large rainforest trees
  • Hidden jungle areas

With luck, you may encounter white-handed gibbons, monitor lizards, wild boar, snakes, flying squirrels, and numerous species of birds and insects.

Your guide may also demonstrate traditional jungle skills, such as:

  • Identifying useful plants
  • Using natural materials
  • Making simple natural rope
  • Understanding jungle shelter techniques
  • Finding and collecting water safely
  • Reading signs of wildlife activity

Lunch — Beneath the Rainforest Canopy

Stop at a suitable resting point, perhaps beneath large fig trees or beside a cool jungle stream.

Enjoy a freshly prepared jungle lunch accompanied by tropical fruit and snacks.

Important: Bring sufficient drinking water and drink regularly throughout the trek.

Afternoon — Camp 2

Continue deeper through the rainforest until reaching Jungle Camp 2, generally located near a riverbank, stream, or secluded waterfall.

Once at camp, take time to rest and cool off.

If conditions are suitable, enjoy a refreshing swim in the river while the trekking team prepares the campsite and dinner.

Tea, coffee, and snacks will be served while you relax.

Evening — Life in the Jungle

Dinner will again feature traditional Indonesian-style food, which may include:

  • Rice
  • Stir-fried vegetables
  • Fish or chicken
  • Tempeh
  • Tofu
  • Sambal

A campfire may be prepared at the campsite, depending on weather and local conditions.

Spend the evening relaxing, sharing stories, enjoying the sounds of the rainforest, and looking up at the night sky.

For those who still have energy, an optional short night walk may be possible. This can provide opportunities to observe nocturnal insects, frogs, and potentially other nighttime wildlife.

Approximate trekking: 6–7 hours
Overnight: Jungle Camp 2
Wildlife focus: Gibbons • Reptiles • Birds • Insects • Flying squirrels and other nocturnal species

Morning — Final Jungle Breakfast

Start the final morning with a light jungle breakfast, such as banana pancakes, fresh fruit, and hot tea or coffee.

Take some time to enjoy your final moments surrounded by the rainforest.

Short Final Hike

After breakfast, enjoy a final short walk around the campsite and, depending on conditions, visit a nearby small waterfall or stream.

The trail then gradually descends toward the Bohorok River.

Pack Up & River Tube Adventure

After packing and cleaning the campsite, begin the return journey toward Bukit Lawang.

Instead of walking the entire way back, enjoy an exciting river tube rafting experience down the Bohorok River.

Float along the river with your guides while enjoying the surrounding jungle scenery—a fun and refreshing way to finish your rainforest adventure.

Life jackets and dry bags are provided.

Upon reaching Bukit Lawang village, the jungle trekking adventure comes to an end.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are naturally present in the rainforest. We strongly recommend bringing and using mosquito repellent throughout the trek.

Basic local mosquito repellent can be purchased in shops in Bukit Lawang. Local products may have relatively low DEET concentrations. If you prefer a stronger or higher-DEET repellent, please bring your preferred product with you.

Leeches

Leeches can occasionally be encountered in the rainforest, particularly during wet conditions. They are a natural part of the jungle environment. Long socks, suitable trekking clothing, and appropriate footwear can help reduce exposure.

Trail Conditions

This is a genuine rainforest trekking experience. Trails may be steep, muddy, slippery, uneven, and covered with exposed roots. Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours in a tropical environment.

The five days in the jungle were a really cool experience and absolutely worth it. A big thank you to our guide Tommy for a great time – the rafting on the way back was an absolute highlight! The food was always great and there was always plenty of it. I highly recommend this tour to anyone thinking about doing it.

¡100% recomendados!

The Sumatra tour and travel was truly a once in a lifetime experience! The jungle was amazing and captivating and our guide Tommy was great!! When we spotted a toucan but couldn’t see it again. He did a toucan call which the toucan responded and allow us to see it again. We did the 5D4N trek. The food was amazing truly above and beyond. The trek was not that intense and we spent a bunch of time swimming and relaxing in rivers. I recommend it to anyone!
